DirecTV Loses Viacom Channels

In the latest event of corporate greed and dominance, the two television giants Viacom and DirecTV battle it out with each other. Viacom, one of the top five largest mass media companies in the United States, wants a 30 percent increase in the amount that DirecTV pays them to broadcast their shows. Viacom currently broadcasts hit shows such as Comedy Channel, MTV, Nickelodeon, and VH1 television. Both sides are adamant that they are not the ones at fault in this dispute. Viacom claims that they are the top media company that supports DirecTV programming and should be compensated higher for their quality television programs. They insist that raising the cost would only affect the consumer by increasing their bill only a couple of pennies a day. DirecTV is countering their arguments based on the latest performance of Viacom’s programming. Recent studies have pointed out that some of Viacom’s shows are down as much as 26% in the Nielsen ratings. DirecTV feels they should not have to increase their programming funding to Viacom based on the lack luster performance of their shows.

The ramifications of this dispute over money are affecting the most valuable assets they have, which are the customers. This dispute has caused around 20 million subscribers to DirecTV to lose access to many of their favorite shows. In fact, many shows like The Daily Show have sent out information to their viewers to call DirecTV and vent their frustrations out on them and demand an end to this greedy disagreement. In addition, with many of the media companies demanding more money for their shows, it has affected the consumers in another way. Over the past several years the average television bill has risen around seven percent to an average of around $80 each. Unfortunately this trend looks to continue to increase for the next few years, which will mean higher cost for the consumers and an increase in the possibility of more company disputes and channel blackouts. Consumers can only hope that these mass media companies will realize what is at stake and just how much their greedy ambitions are costing the American consumers. If they stand behind their motto of providing 100 percent customer satisfaction, then they need to think about the subscribers rather than company profits.

Watch Commercial Free TV With Dish Auto-Hop

Dish Network has introduced a new model of digital video recorder (DVR) that comes with a variety of features that can make viewing television (TV) shows much easier. The new DVR is known as the Hopper. The device is able to use a feature of Dish Network known as PrimeTime Anytime. PrimeTime Anytime gives Dish Network customers the ability to record all of the primetime programming on all of the four major TV broadcast networks at the same time. These programs are then saved so they can be viewed at any point in the next eight days.

The one feature of the new Hopper DVR boxes that is attracting the most attention is the Dish Auto Hop feature. This is a revolutionary new idea that gives viewers the ability to completely remove all of the commercial breaks that occur during a primetime broadcast. It is different from fast forward and 30-second-skip features because every commercial is automatically removed without any input from the user once the feature is activated. The commercials are actually recorded along with the program. This means it is possible to watch the program with Auto Hop disabled so the commercials can be viewed as well.

The Auto Hop feature can be activated by viewers at the start of a primetime program that has been recorded with the PrimeTime Anytime service. Activating Auto Hop means that the DVR will skip TV commercials automatically. The only sign that there was a commercial break is a small Hopper logo in the bottom corner of the screen and a sudden flash of a commercial before the program resumes. This can reduce the amount of time it takes to watch a single show and can make it easier for viewers to explore new shows without sitting through long blocks of advertising. The experience of watching a dramatic commercial free TV show can be made better because the mood that is created will not be broken by intrusive and irrelevant advertising.

Viewers who are using the Dish Auto Hop feature might still need to use the skip-ahead button for some broadcasts. Auto Hop currently works exclusively with PrimeTime Anywhere. The feature is also not available until a few hours after the program has aired. Local broadcasts, news and sports are not covered by this feature. Regardless, the implementation of Auto Hop on the new Hopper DVRs is an amazing step forward for consumers because it finally puts the viewer in complete control of the broadcast. The total absence of advertising while watching a show means that only the programming that a viewer wants to see will be played.

TV Customers DO Have Choices

With all the money disputes lately between TV service providers and the companies that offer the channels – it’s the customers that are taking the hit. These battles over bucks leave the people who actually pay the money with the short end of the stick. Or in these cases – with blacked out channels.

So what’s a TV watcher to do? Call and say stop fighting over money, I want my channels back? Probably not going to work. Neither does calling and complaining. However you might be able to get something out of them if you can stay on the phone long enough. But who wants to waste their time and energy yelling at a stranger?

The reason the service providers let things go this far is 1) they don’t think people will do anything about it and 2) there are so few providers you don’t have an alternative. Or do you?

Ten to twenty years ago people really didn’t have options. You had your one provider per area and that’s who you went with. Now-a-days people have many more options. Most people actually have about 4 or 5 options in their area and don’t even know it. You’re pretty much guaranteed 2 satellite TV providers per area and at least one cable provider. And now with more fiber optic companies like FiOS and U-verse entering the mix, people have even more providers to choose from. So know your options and use them as leverage the next time your service provider takes your business for granted.

With all that said, there are even companies out there that provide search tools for you to check your area for local deals and discounts. So if being the pawn in a corporate money game isn’t for you, check to see what else is out there. You’d be surprised to find out you’ve probably been overpaying on your service anyway and there are better cheaper deals you can take advantage of.
