Tune in Tonight and Catch the Animated Holiday Classic ‘Mickey’s Christmas Carol’

December 20, 2011 No Comments

Tonight at 6 pm on ABC Family you have the chance to catch an animated Holiday Classic, ‘Mickey’s Christmas Carol’ (1983). Mickey’s Christmas Carol is a 1983 American animated short film produced by Walt Disney Productions and distributed by Buena Vista Distribution Company. On Christmas Eve 1843, while all of Victorian England is in the merry spirit of Christmas, Ebenezer Scrooge thinks only of the money he has made and of making more. While Scrooge’s selfish thoughts cascade in his head, Mickey Mouse plays and underpaid worker, who stays loyal and continues to work for him. Cratchit reluctantly asks for a “half day off” for Christmas, to which Scrooge replies it will be unpaid (in contrast to the original version where Scrooge is irritated at giving Cratchit Christmas off with pay). Scrooge’s continues on his way home where he denies the poor a simple donation and denies his cheery nephew Fred the courtesy of attending his dinner party. Most of us know the rest of the story, but if you don’t you will have to tune into ABC Family tonight at 6pm. Here are some interesting facts about this version that some of you might not know.

  • This is the last film where Clarence Nash provides the voice of Donald Duck and the first where Wayne Allwine provides the voice of Mickey Mouse.
  • This is also the first time that Alan Young provides the voice of Scrooge McDuck. Bill Thompson, who’d done the voice in Scrooge McDuck and Money, had passed away, and Alan Young’s voice is noticeably softer than Thompson’s was, with a stronger Scots accent.
  • This was the first animated short with Mickey Mouse since The Simple Things
  • Minnie Mouse plays Mrs. Cratchit, though she doesn’t say a single word.
  • The theatrical release of this film was as part of the 1983 reissue of The Rescuers.
